Shoulder Pain: Do Not Let It Stop You From Living

You probably didn't realize just how many things you do each day that are tied to shoulder movement. That is, until you began to feel pain in your shoulder — then, you learn that everything from brushing your hair to using the restroom involves some sort of shoulder movement. With winces of pain, you go about your day. There are things you can do to decrease the pain you experience each day. Here, you'll find a few tips to do just that.

See Your Doctor

Before you do anything, it's important that you talk with your doctor about what you've been experiencing. Shoulder pain could be caused by something as simple as a sore muscle, but it could also be a sign of something more serious going on somewhere in your body.

Your doctor will likely order x-rays and possibly an MRI to get a clear picture of what's going on inside. They will also ask you a number of questions to rule out things beyond the injury that could be causing the pain.

Physical Therapy

One thing that your doctor may recommend is working with a physical therapist. This therapy will include exercises that stretch and strengthen the shoulder to enhance healing. In some cases, this therapy will resolve the issue, but unfortunately, not everyone finds complete relief and need to search out alternative or additional treatments.

Orthopedic Care

Another recommendation your doctor may make is to see an orthopedic doctor. This doctor focuses on joint and bone injuries. So, if there's an underlying issue causing the pain, they will be able to identify the problem and create a treatment plan that may include further physical therapy and surgery.

When surgery is required, weeks of physical therapy are typically ordered to help with flexibility and expedite recovery.

Pillow, Heat, and Cold

One investment that you'll be happy with is a pillow that is specially designed to comfort those with shoulder pain at night. These pillows typically have a cut-out area where the shoulder can rest without putting too much pressure on it.

Heat and cold can be helpful to ease the pain, but don't overdo it. Too much heat can cause the joints to get stiff and too much cold can make muscles stiff. Treat the shoulder with 20 minutes of cold followed by 20 minutes of moist heat.
