Learning About Diabetes Diagnosis, Treatment and Research

Welcome to my site, my name is Jess Indaja. I was diagnosed with type 2 diabetes after struggling with my weight throughout my teen years and adulthood. My doctor informed me about all of the dangers associated with my diet and exercise habits. I was encouraged to change the way I ate and moved in an effort to reverse my blood sugar problem. I made the changes, but still struggle with controlling my blood sugar. After going through this trying situation, I decided to make a site that may help others with problems associated with type 2 diabetes. I will discuss diagnostic procedures, treatments and medical research concerning this disease. I hope you visit often and learn all you can to control your type 2 diabetes or help others with this condition.

What To Expect During And After LASIK Eye Surgery

by Carla Hudson

LASIK eye surgery is a medical procedure that is used to restore vision. It involves reshaping the surface of the eyes. This is an outpatient procedure that can be completed quickly and safely. If you are concerned about experiencing pain both during and after this type of procedure, read on to learn what you can expect.

Eye Surgery

LASIK surgery is used to correct myopia (nearsightedness), hyperopia (farsightedness), and astigmatism (an irregular curvature of the lens). An optometrist should conduct a complete eye examination to determine if you are a candidate for LASIK eye surgery.

Prior to this type of surgery, anesthetic drops will be administered to the eyes. The drops will cause a numbing sensation. Patients remain awake throughout LASIK eye surgery. From here, a cut is made along each cornea and a laser is used to resurface the eyes. The entire procedure can be conducted in the amount of time that a routine office visit with an optometrist would last.

Discomfort And Care

During the actual surgery, you will not experience any pain. This is due to the anesthetic drops blocking pain signals at the nerve endings of each eye. That said, the effectiveness of the drops will wear off quickly. Once this occurs, sensitivity to light and a slight burning sensation may be experienced. The surgeon who performs the LASIK procedure will advise you to avoid touching or rubbing your eyes.

You will be given protective eye covers to wear. These covers will prevent you from accidentally touching your eyes. They will also block dust and smoke from irritating your eyes. You can wear the eye covers during the day and while you are sleeping. However, you will need to administer prescription eye drops to each eye at set times. The drops will keep your eyes moist and promote healing.

Make sure to follow your doctor's orders for a couple of weeks. This may involve attending a follow-up appointment. During the time that you are recuperating, you should avoid driving. That's because light sensitivity and debris exposure could interfere with your driving ability.

If you were to get a piece of dirt or another contaminant trapped in one or both of your eyes, you could incur an infection. Once your eyes have healed, you will not need to wear glasses or contact lenses. In addition, your eye doctor may sign a statement that you can bring to the DMV to have your corrective lens requirement eliminated from your driver's license.
