Learning About Diabetes Diagnosis, Treatment and Research

Welcome to my site, my name is Jess Indaja. I was diagnosed with type 2 diabetes after struggling with my weight throughout my teen years and adulthood. My doctor informed me about all of the dangers associated with my diet and exercise habits. I was encouraged to change the way I ate and moved in an effort to reverse my blood sugar problem. I made the changes, but still struggle with controlling my blood sugar. After going through this trying situation, I decided to make a site that may help others with problems associated with type 2 diabetes. I will discuss diagnostic procedures, treatments and medical research concerning this disease. I hope you visit often and learn all you can to control your type 2 diabetes or help others with this condition.

Visiting A Clinical Laboratory: What To Expect

by Carla Hudson

A patient's first visit to a clinical laboratory may be a stressful experience. Unsure of what to expect, patients can rest assured that laboratories are effective and safe places that ultimately work towards finding solutions for a healthier outcome. Here is a brief overview of what a clinical laboratory offers the medical community and what patients can expect as part of the process.

Types of Tests Performed

Though typically associated with bloodwork, clinical laboratories actually offer a wide range of types of tests for patients. Bloodwork, urine and stool samples, saliva, hair, and tissue samples are just some of the many types of samples taken at a laboratory to help medical providers diagnose and treat their patients. Clinical laboratories also conduct various types of tests which include patients who are experiencing a wide range of health issues that may be more serious. Those suffering from diabetes or hypertension, to name a few, may be required to visit a lab to provide the necessary samples to check on their health status and progress. On the other hand, patients who may be pregnant or trying to conceive may be required to perform laboratory work to ensure hormone levels are at an acceptable rate.

How to Prepare

Depending on the type of lab test being conducted, certain preparation may be required. For basic bloodwork, for instance, eating breakfast is recommended as the withdrawal of blood can lead to patients feeling lightheaded or fatigued. Pregnant patients who are undergoing a blood glucose test, on the other hand, may be required to fast the day of the test to ensure that their glucose levels are as accurate as possible. For any lab being conducted, it is highly recommended that patients avoid smoking or strenuous exercise beforehand.

Being well-prepared also means being ready for the administrative side of the laboratory. When arriving at the laboratory, all necessary paperwork, including identification and insurance documents, will also be required. Assembling these beforehand will ensure that the check-in process runs as smoothly as possible and will help streamline the entire process.

Getting Results

Waiting on test results can certainly be a stressful time for patients who are eager to receive answers or resolutions to their health issues. Test results, depending on the type of lab being performed, usually are ready within a few days. Results will be confidentially provided to the patient from the laboratory directly or, more commonly, through their medical provider's office for a thorough explanation of the lab outcomes.

Any questions or concerns regarding the laboratory experience or outcome should be discussed with one's medical provider as well as a plan for moving forward with any medications or treatments that may be required. In general, staying as positive as possible is always recommended as this helps the patient stay focused on their health plan and work with their provider to ensure the best health possible in the future.

Keep these tips in mind when looking for clinical laboratory services near you.
