Preventing Osteoporosis When Going Through Menopause

When you begin to go through the menopause process, you may have many different issues on your mind. After all, there are numerous symptoms associated with menopause, and it can have major effects upon your day-to-day life and how you feel overall. One of the biggest concerns that you may have is the possibility that you will suffer from osteoporosis as a result of going through the menopause process. Get to know some of the ways that you can prevent this from being an issue as you go through menopause.

Increase Your Calcium Intake

Osteoporosis is a condition in which the bones become less dense. The lack of bone density is what make them brittle or weak. Calcium is one of the primary nutrients that contribute to bone density and can therefore help to prevent osteoporosis as you go through menopause.

During menopause, your body's ability to absorb and properly use calcium reduces drastically. As a result, you will need to be sure that you consume more calcium than ever during this time. Calcium supplements are an excellent way to increase your calcium intake. You may also want to incorporate non-fat yogurt and non-fat milk into your daily diet so that you can be sure you are getting as much calcium as possible.

Get Or Stay Active

Staying active and getting enough exercise are extremely important to maintaining your bone strength and density as you go through menopause. If you were not very active before, now is definitely the time that you should start. Aerobic exercise is important for building and maintaining the density and strength of your bones.

Of course, if you were not very active leading up to the beginning of menopause, you will want to start to incorporate high-impact aerobic exercises into your regular routine slowly. This means you should try to go for a short walk or two every day.

You can then build up to high-impact exercise like jogging, hiking, aerobics, or dancing as your body becomes more accustomed to exercise. Weight training and other exercises can also help you to build up muscle strength and suppleness to protect your bones further and to prevent impact injuries.

Now that you know a few of the ways that you can prevent osteoporosis as you are going through menopause, you can better take care of your health going forward.
